How to Participate

Project A.R.E.S. was created specifically to allow covens, kindreds or other groups to be able to create and contribute entire kits or materials to the project. If you would like to contribute entire kits or simply a portion of the materials required, we do ask that you try to follow the parameters of the project as closely as possible. We are trying to create a fairly standardized product in order to foster trust in the chaplains who order the kits as well as the personnel who will receive the kits. The following items will exactly fill an Altoids tin.

The kit consists of the following items:

  1. The Box
  2. The Booklet
  3. Consecrated  Oil
  4. Consecrated Salt
  5. Cone Incense
  6. Stone
  7. Seashell
  8. Pendant
  9. Military Pagan Blessing Card

1. The Box

We use a standard-size Altoids tin. We chose the tin for several reasons. It is sturdy, readily available nationwide, inexpensive (many people keep their tins after eating the mints) and it is easily decorated. You can paint the tins, collage them, or find other ways to personalize them. Please remember to wash the tins before you decorate them, and ensure that the lid can be closed completely and that you do not change the silhouette of the tin (for instance, put fake fur on the outside) It is important to retain the portability of the kits, and they should not be decorated with small items which may fall off.

Please see our Tips on Decorating the Tins here before you start!!! >>

2. The Booklet

The files and instructions for creating the booklet can be found in the Files area of the website. If you choose to print the booklet yourselves, please follow the instructions carefully and ensure that bulky or extra heavy paper is not used and that the booklet will fit in a tin.

3. Consecrated Oil

The consecrated oil is a central element to the protection ritual. If your group chooses to create the oils, please read our tips page very carefully. The oils are in a 1 dram or less glass vial and we create them with natural essential oils.

Here are some internet sources of vials and oils:

4. Consecrated Salt

Small 2"x3.5" zip close baggies with about 1 tablespoon of salt. Please don't use coarse salt as this takes up too much room in the kit. Sea salt is preferred but not required, ordinary table salt is fine.

We use Real Salt

Small Zip Baggies available from:
G.T. Bag Company

5. Cone Incense

Approximately 3 standard-size cones will fit in the same size baggie as the salt requires, folded in half.

6. Stone

Please include one 1/2-3/4" tumbled gemstone of your choice. Ensure that it will fit completely within the confines of the tin and does not interfere with the lid closing.

7. Seashell

If you have a source of small flat seashells, one can be included as an incense/salt container. We recommend the clamshell or mussel style as pictured, the largest measurement should be no larger than 1 3/4" across and about 1/2" high

8. Pendant (optional)

If you would like to include a small blessed pendant in the kit, please do so. This is not currently a requirement. We would like to be able to offer this option with every kit in the future, and have different types of pendants available, i.e. Celtic knot, Pentagram, Thor's Hammer, etc.

9. Military Pagan Blessing Card - Provided by Circle Sanctuary. We will put these into
all kits before they are sent.

Please note:

All elements of the kit can be consecrated individually as you create the kits or done
after the kit is complete. We encourage you to use your imagination and to create "themed" kits. Themed kits can include elements of Wiccan, Druidic, Asatru, Ceremonial or other traditions. Please see the list on the order pages for examples of traditions. Other ideas can include nature themes or geometric designs. We have gotten feedback that dark matte or neutral "sandy" colors are likely preferred to bright or shiny metallic decoration. Also please note that any depictions of the crescent moon with stars, animals, people or other similar designs will likely cause problems in Muslim countries. Neutral, nature-based (trees, foliage etc.) or abstract patterns will be best.

Best Method of Assembly:

  1. Place the completed booklet in the bottom of the tin
  2. Fold the salt packet in thirds and place on left half of tin
  3. Place vial of oil on right side of tin
  4. Place incense cones, stone in middle between salt and oil
  5. Place seashell and pendant if included on top of salt, near cones
