Sacred Circle is moving! (Note - Original date of article was 2/2007)
After two years (and a few months) at our beautiful rented location downtown, Anderson Commons,
Sacred Circle is moving!
Anderson Commons has been sold to a new owner who
is choosing to convert the property into corporate offices. We are sad to be leaving, but we
are also very excited about the future!
After careful and lengthy consideration by the Board of Directors and Officers, we made the
decision to use the funds collected up to this point in the Sacred Earth Fund to purchase
a meeting space of our own, rather than seeking a new rental location. Given that we had
somewhat limited funds, we made the decision to purchase a yurt which we could then put
up on private property, until we are able to purchase a piece of land or build a permanent building
of our own.
You may be asking - what is a yurt? A yurt is a freestanding circular tent-like
structure which originates from the tribal nomads who still live on the plains
of Mongolia. It has a large skylight at the top of the roof and straight walls.
The wall and roof structure are integrated to give the yurt structural
integrity. There are no support beams or other supports inside, the interior is
open and it has a high amount of floor space for the size of the yurt.
Our Yurt will look very similar to this one:

It is a 30 foot diameter yurt and we have four large
windows which will be oriented to the four directions.
Our yurt also has two doors and a bronzed (tinted) dome like this one has which
helps to cut down on heat inside
in the summertime. We can also raise the dome to release heat in the summer.

What does this mean to our community? This means that for the first time,
we will have a permanent sacred space in which to meet and worship. We will be
able to create our temple literally from the ground up, in the manner in which
we choose. And once we do purchase land of our own, it will be fairly simple to
dismantle and transport the yurt to the new location.
Why private property? This was a decision that was driven
by two main factors, the first being simple economics. Putting the yurt up on
private property allows us to rebuild the Sacred Earth Fund much more
quickly, because we will not be paying rental fees to an outside landlord every
month. Second, the nature and construction of a yurt make it much more
vulnerable to damage through vandalism, arson or theft. Having it in a location
where there is always someone present reduces these risks considerably!
Will this change anything about Sacred Circle? Yes! We
are very excited about the possibilities that having our own space will allow.
We will have much more freedom to express our beliefs and we will also have the
ability to craft a beautiful, sacred space which is dedicated to our ceremonies.
Factors such as drumming, food, and other things which are more restricted in a
rental environment will be much less of a concern in our new space. Certainly,
having much more privacy and freedom will have an enormous impact. We look
forward to experiencing just how much this will change. As always, our full moon
ceremonies will be open to the public to attend!
How can I help? This is a great question! Since we are in
a completely new environment, we will be needing a lot of help with materials
and equipment for our new space. We do not have any of the traditional
"infrastructure" which makes life comfortable such as chairs, tables for altars
or crafting, furnishings, decorations, etc. We literally have a chance to craft
the future of our group right now! In the immediate future, we will also have
need of building materials such as wood, flooring, fencing etc. If you would
like to make a donation, please contact us for specific needs. We will also need
help with the yurt-raising! As always, any donations are gratefully accepted,
and also may be tax-deductible! Check with your tax advisor for more info.
